Baby Massage - More than just a Massage

Baby Massage - More than just a Massage

Article by International Association of Infant Massage

Baby Massage or Infant Massage is becoming more recognised here in Australia. Research shows that touch can affect every aspect of our lives. ;Nurturing touch (or lack of it) can impact on the way we think, feel and relate to others.

Infant massage uses gentle, tactile stimulation, and loving verbal communication to deepen the relationship between parents and their baby. It is a shared experience, done with the baby, not to the baby. The strokes used can be both stimulating and relaxing. It is easy to learn and a beautiful experience to have with your baby.
There are four main benefits of infant massage. Firstly there is the interaction between baby and parent. The eye to eye contact, the soothing sounds, the smells, the cuddles and smiles all help parent and baby feel closer and in turn help to promote bonding. This can be extremely helpful for a mother suffering from postnatal depression, or a parent that is struggling to connect with their child.

The second benefit is the stimulation that baby receives. ;Research shows that the respiratory, muscular, circulatory and immune systems all benefit from the positive effects of massage. This is particularly true for premature babies. ;There is also the special language that develops between parent and baby. Infant massage classes are an excellent way of becoming aware of baby’s cues and connecting with your baby on a deeper level. ;This helps build confidence as a parent.

The third benefit is relief. Massage can assist in the relief of colic and tummy discomfort. There are specific massage techniques that can improve baby’s digestion. Other areas of relief are teething, growing pains, chest and sinus build up. Parents feel a sense of achievement knowing that they have helped alleviate their baby’s discomfort.

The forth benefit is relaxation. Massage can help baby with increased flexibility, it can also help baby lessen hyper sensitivity and promote the enjoyment of healthy, positive time out. ;Healthy sleeping patterns are also promoted when parents and babies are relaxed .

When you attend an infant massage class, please make sure that your instructor has been trained and accredited with an Infant Massage Association. ;You can then enjoy peace of mind knowing you are learning techniques that have been studied and accredited best for your baby.

Classes are lots of fun, and are held in a relaxed environment. ;The strokes are easy to grasp when demonstrated by an experienced instructor. It is an opportunity to make friends, share your experiences and learn from each other. Your instructor will teach a little at a time to ensure that you are confident with every aspect of the massage strokes. Classes are best suited for ages newborn to pre-crawling. Once a baby is mobile they don’t like to stay still for very long as there is a huge world to investigate and explore. IAIM instructors are qualified to teach to the age of 12 months.

The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) is the most comprehensive training certification available in infant massage. Certified Instructors have completed intensive training, covering all aspects of massage including the physical and psychological effects relating to baby and parent/carer.

The IAIM pursue a beautiful vision. To promote nurturing touch and communication through training, education and research so that parents, caregivers and children are loved, valued and respected throughout the world community. To celebrate Baby Massage Awareness Week (August 1 – 8) contact your local instructor.
